Woolard

The Woollards, Woolards, Wollards, and their Descendants in America from 1650, by Janes K. Wollard.  Third edition, revised and enlarged, © 2009 by Janes K. Wollard and Sylvester L. Willard.  This Digital Edition is published under license by Richard Bingham, Oceanport, New Jersey, September 2009

Janes Wollard published the first edition of this massive genealogy in 1999, after thirty-seven years of research and with the input of thirty-eight contributors.  He described the volume as an "illustrated" genealogy of the Woollard-Woolard-Wollard Family.  It contained 837 pages of narrative text, 652 pictures, thirty-four maps, fifty document images, five large charts, and a 63-page index, in all of which Mr. Wollard presented the known genealogical history of more than 17,000 descendants and their spouses.

With previous editions out of print, Mr. Wollard and Sylvester Willard asked Digital Editions to help in the production of an all-digital edition, containing extensive revisions and much additional materials.  Nine months later (September 2009), Digital Editions proudly announced the publication of a new (third) edition containing 1010 pages of narrative and more than 960 images.

The compilation mostly concerns descendants (in male and female lines, through as many as thirteen generations) of (1) Samuel Woollard, who settled in Virginia (Northern Neck) about 1650, accompanied by Mary and George Woollard, and (2) Captain William Woolard/Woolwarde, who arrived in Southeastern Virginia (via Isle of Wight County) about 1670. Before 1860, descendants of Samuel  lived mostly in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, and Illinois; descendats of Captain William resided mostly in North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas.

Of fifty-three chapters, six cover descendants of Samuel, twenty-two cover known and putative descendants of Capt. William. The remaining twenty-seven cover families of uncertain origin, twelve of these suggest, by virtue of juxtaposition, descent from Capt. William; another two suggest descent from Samuel. One chapter is devoted to the descendants of freedmen, formerly slaves of John Woolard. Four short chapters are devoted to families of the name in England and Australia.
