This History and genealogy of West families in America includes an account of Captain John West (Governor of Virginia, 1635-1637) and his descendants (among whom we find the noted Antarctic explorer, Richard E. Byrd) [Chapter 4]; an account of Anthony West of Accomac, who is said to have come to the Colonies in the James in 1622, and his descendants [Chapter 5]; an account of Joseph West of Prince Georges County, Maryland (1695) [Chapter 6]; his descendants, including children who settled in Montgomery County, Maryland [Chapter 7], a grandson (Joseph West) of Frederick County, Maryland [Chapter 8], and a great-grandson (John West) of Bourbon County, Kentucky [Chapter 9]; an account of Sir Stephen West, who settled in Prince Georges County in 1700, and his descendants [Chapter 10]; Ignatius West of Chatham County, North Carolina and his descendants [Chapter 11]; William West, also of Chatham County, who later relocated with many of his children to Simpson County, Kentucky [Chapter 12]; Francis West of Duxbury, Massachusetts (1630's) [Chapter 13]; Caleb West of Philadelphia (b. 1763) [Chapter 14]; English ancestry and American descendants of Benjamin West, the artist [Chapter 15]; the West families of Stafford, Prince William, and Fairfax Counties Virginia [Chapter 16]; William West of Sligo, Ireland, and his descendants primarily in Pennsylvania and Baltimore, Maryland [Chapter 17]; Robert West (b. 1695) of Sussex County, Delaware [Chapter 18]; Walker West of Garrard County, Kentucky [Chapter 19]; William West and his descendants of Norfolk and Princess Anne Counties, Virginia [Chapter 20]; and West families "unmentioned elsewhere" grouped by state and county [Chapter 21]
The first three chapters of the volume concern West family precedents in England, most notably in the noble De La Warr family; Chapters 22 through 25 list Wests among Virginia and Maryland immigrants before 1700, in the land records kept in Richmond and Annapolis, in early censuses, and in rosters of the American Revolution. The 26th chapter provides us with a list of "Wests of Today Prominent in Public and Professional Life."
Among related families, CAWBY, CRUMBAUGH, DEFFENBAUGH, EADES, HARLAN, HARRELSON, HEDRICK, JOHNSON, JONES, LEWIS, MANN, MARTIN, MOORE, SMITH, STEWART, TAYLOR, WHICKER, and WILLIAMS are prominent. The entire index is on-line.
