Webster
History and Genealogy of the Gov. John Webster Family of Connecticut, by William Holcomb Webster and Rev. Melville Reuben Webster (Rochester, New York, 1915). 8vo., xvi + 1648 pages with 168 pages of index and thirty-six images. The Digital Edition (published on CD-ROM) © January 2006
John Webster, of Warwickshire, England emigrated first to Cambridge, Massachusetts (about 1630), then to Hartford, Connecticut (1636), apparently as one of the original proprietors of the town, and one of the founders of the Connecticut Colony. He served as Governor of the Colony in 1656, and as Chief Justice 1657-1659. He removed to Hadley Massachusetts in 1659 or 1660 and died there in April 1661. With his wife, Agnes, he had at least seven children: Matthew; William, Robert, Thomas, Anne, Elizabeth, and Mary.
John’s progeny, as recorded in the seventy-four chapters of this massive genealogical history, encompassed ten generations. The compilation is especially noteworthy for the abundant and accurate accounts of military service, collected by William Holcomb Webster during his long tenure in Washington as Superintendent of U. S. War and Navy Records. At the time of his death in 1896, Mr. Webster was Chief Examiner of the U. S. Civil Service Commission. Other luminaries of the family included Noah Webster, the lexicographer (source of the familiar expression, “according to Webster”), and Pelatiah Webster, noted for his contributions to the Constitution of the United States
