Venable

Venables of Virginia: an Account of the Ancestors and Descendants of Samuel Woodson Venable of "Springfield" and of his Brother William Lewis Venable of "Haymarket" Both of Prince Edward County, Virginia, by Elizabeth Marshall Venable (New York, 1925).  8vo, xvi + 209 pages and twenty-two interleaved images.   Digital Edition on CD-ROM © January 2003.

The brothers, Samuel Woodson Venable and William Lewis Venable, sons of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Woodson) Venable, were fourth generation descendants Abraham Venables, who settled in New Kent County, Virginia, before 1687.  Counted as one of the "first families of Virginia," the Venables distinguished themselves as planters, patriots, statesmen, and educators.  Among other things, Nathaniel Venable and his sons were instrumental in founding Hampden-Sidney College, where they educated most of their children and grand-children, and a very large percentage of their great-grandchildren.   The Venables were closely allied well into the twentieth century with other prominent Virginia families, including CABELL, CARRINGTON, READ, WATKINS, and WOODSON.

The Ancestors and Descendants of William Henry Venable, by Henrietta Brady Brown (Cincinnati, 1954).  8vo, vi + 198 pages of text and an eight-page index.   Digital Edition on CD-ROM © January 2003.

Born in Ohio in 1836, William Henry Venable -- poet, educator, novelist, and historian -- was a fifth generation descendant of Thomas Venable of New Jersey.   On William Henry's ancestors, Ms. Brown has given us seven chapters (47 pages).  The eighth chapter (31 pages) focuses upon William Henry Venable and his life achievements, much of it based on his own writings, with a sampling of his poetry.  The remaining nine chapters (120 pages) give us often exquisite life histories of William Henry's children, grand children, and great-grandchildren.  This volume, a joy to read, is noteworthy for its wealth of biographical detail.   Related families include BAIRD, BRADY, BULLA, CRALL, LIDDLE, LONGLEY, MACDONALD, MCCOY, PALMER, SUTTON, TUCKERMAN, VATER, AND WEIFFENBACH.
