Van Deursen

Van Deursen Family, by Captain Albert Harrison Van Deusen, originally published in two volumes (New York, 1912), xviv + 851 pages (numbered consecutively), including a 130-page index.  This Digital Edition, published on CD-ROM, © March 2007.

Abraham Pieterson, the progenitor of the Van Deursen (Van Deusen) family, emigrated from Holland to New Amsterdam (New York) before 1636.  He lived on Heerewegh Straat (Broadway), where he carried on the occupation of miller and innkeeper, and also traded in land and cattle.

Abraham’s descendants are traced in this genealogical history through ten generations.  The publication includes, additionally, the record of “unplaced Van Deursens” (families assumed to have descended from Abraham, but without known connections – 42 pages), accounts of “unplaced Van Deursens with military records” (26 pages), and accounts of related families (90 pages).  The latter includes extended accounts of the Bogardus, Davis, Hoes (Goes), Rightmyer, Roblin, Tefft, Van Alstyne, Van Buren, and Waite families.

Closely related families, in addition to those already named, include ADAMS, BRESEE, BROWN, BURGHARDT, CAMPBELL, CLARK, DECKER, DE LA MATRE, DEMOREST, DEWEY, FERRO (FIERO), FOSTER, HOLLENBECK (HALLENBECK), HUYCK, JOHNSON, JONES, LANSING (LANSINGH), MacARTHUR, MILLER, MOORE, OOTHOUT, QUACKENBUSH, REEVE, ROGERS, SCHUYLER, SMITH, SNYDER, STAATS, TEN BROECK, TEN EYCK, VAN ALEN, VAN BUREN, VAN DEN BERG, VAN VALKENBURG, VOSBURGH, WHEELER, WHITE, WILLIAMS, WINNE, and WITBECK (WHITBECK).  For a complete list, see the on-line index.

Variant spellings of the Van Deursen include Van Deusen (most commonly), and Van Duzer, Van Deurssen, Van Dusen, Van Duzen, Van Duzor, Van Dusar, Van Dozen, Vandosen, Vanduzer, Vandusen, Vanduzen, Van Duzn, Vanduson, Van Doozer, and Vanduser.

Of the work, said the compiler:

“And very fitting it is that the writing of the history of this great family should be undertaken by a soldier, for the Van Deursens have been a race of soldiers, as the reader will see by a glance through the pages of these volumes. One cannot but be struck by the fact that they have been, for the most part, farmers and soldiers-men of peace and men of war - honest, sturdy citizens, who have made for that which is good and true in the building up of this land of the free.”
And fitting it is that the compiler should devote so much care and attention to the military records of the Van Deursens, having served for many years as a clerk in the U. S. Bureau of Pensions.
