Vail
Genealogy of Some of the Vail Family Descended from Thomas Vail, at Salem, Massachusetts, 1640, Together with Collateral Lines, by William Penn Vail, M.D. (Blairstown, N.J., 1937). viii + 592 pages, including a 34-page index and 74 images. Digital Edition on CD-ROM © October 1999.
Thomas Vail, Quaker, arrived in Salem, Massachusetts, with his wife Sarah in 1640; removed to Southampton, Long Island as early as 1647; then, by 1660, to Westchester, New York, where he appeared as "a man of prominence and influence." His grandchildren removed from Westchester to New Jersey (initially to the vicinity of Plainfield) in the early 1700's.
The author traces the descent from Thomas (in Vail lines) typically through the eighth generation and, in many cases, through the eleventh. In addition, he supplies substantial pedigree information on dozens of collateral families -- most notably ALLYN, ARMSTRONG, BLAIR, CONDICT, DE HART, DRAKE, FITZ RANDOLPH, GREGORY (Gregoire), HARRISON, HOWELL, JOHNSON, JONES, LOCK(E), MOORE, QUINBY, ROBIOU, ROSENKRANS, SAYRE, SCHERMERHORN, SHOTWELL, STROUD, THOMPSON, and WHEELER. The index of the volume in its entirety is reproduced on this site in the Name List.
Wm. Penn Vail also supplies susbstantial biographical information, much of it based on unpublished family records. Notable subjects include Judge Stephen Vail, who owned and operated the Speedwell Iron Works (now "Historic Speedwell") near Morristown, New Jersey; Alfred Vail, who perfected the telegraph and invented Morse code; Theodore N. Vail, President of American Telephone and Telegraph, who was largely responsible for creating a world-wide telephone network; and John I. Blair, industrialist and early railroad pioneer.
For updates and additions to the Thomas Vail Genealogy, see the author's "Moses Vail of Huntington, L. I.," which is also available on CD (see below).

Moses Vail of Huntington, L. I., Showing his Descent from Joseph (2) Vail, son of Thomas Vail at Salem, Massachusetts, 1640, together with Collateral Lines, by William Penn Vail, M. D. (1947), 524 pages, including 52 pages in seven indexes, and 26 Images. Digital Edition on CD-ROM © October 2002.
In the opening chapters of the Moses Vail genealogy, the author (William Penn Vail) discusses the origins of the family, some of its myths (e.g., that George was father of Moses and that Morse invented the telegraph), the early settlement of Long Island, tribulations of the Vails in the War of the Revolution, and the inception of Quakerism in the family (17 pages). The next two chapters (four and five) concern Moses's father (Joseph), his uncles (Samuel and Thomas), his grandfather (Thomas), and his great-uncle (Jeremiah) (15 pages). The next nine chapters concern Moses and his descendants, in some cases through the tenth generation (325 pages).
A Supplementary Chapters contains additions and corrections to the Jeremiah Vail genealogy (12 pages) and the author's own Thomas Vail genealogy (55 pages). Revision of the Moses and Thomas Vail genealogies are continued in the Addenda (32 pages). The Appendix contains Alfred Vail's notes on the North Carolina class of Vails and the Upton class of Vailes (21 pages).
Of the collateral families in this volume: the surnames that appear most frequently are ALLEN, HALL, LOSEE, SMITH, VINCENT, WHITE, and WOLEBEN. For the all the indexes of this volume, see the Name List.
Though many show significant improvement in the Digital Edition, the images in this volume are of very poor quality. However, of them all, there are only three that are relevant to the Moses Vail genealogy -- a portrait of H. H. Vail, the Vail Arms, and the desk of Captain Micah (4) Vail. Of the remaining 23, most are of beds and clock cases -- the author's other hobby was wood working.
The Digital Edition: Complete, with two text files (2.2 Mb) and 26 images files (3.2 Mb).
