Thompson
The Descendants of John Thomson, Pioneer Scotch Covenanter, by Addams S. McAllister, New York, 1917. 8vo, viii + 357 pages (including seventy-one pages in two indexes), with thirty-nine interleaved images. Digital Edition on CD-ROM © February 2002.
John Thomson, originally from Scotland, came to Chester County, Pennsylvania, from Ireland in 1735. He had thirteen children in all (possibly fourteen), most of whom wound up in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, from whence they spread throughout the United States.
McAllister included in his compilation the known descendants of all the surviving children, "with such biographical sketches as could be obtained from available published records or were supplied by the friends of those individuals who were too modest to tell of their own accomplishments." Since he paid as much attention to descendants of the daughters as to those of the sons, there are significant portions of his genealogy devoted to families of other surnames, most notably: GREENLEE and McALISTER or McALLISTER, but also BANKS, BARR, BELL, BOAL, COX, CROTHERS, CURRAN, DIMM, GLOVER, JAMISON, MORSE, WILSON, and WOLFE, among others. For a list of everybody mentioned (including "ancestors of the descendants") see the Name List.

A Genealogy of the Descendants of John Thomson of Plymouth, Mass., also Sketches of the Families of Allen, Cooke, and Hutchinson, by Charles Hutchinson Thompson, Lansing, Michigan, 1890. 8vo, 272 pages, including twenty-one pages of index, and three images. Digital Edition on CD-ROM © January 2000.John Thomson, six years of age, arrived in Plymouth plantation in 1622, in the "third embarkation." He married Mary Cooke (daughter of Mayflower passenger Francis Cooke) in 1645, had twelve children, and died 16 June 1696.
This genealogy gives us the descendants of four of John's five sons through seven additional generations. John's first son, Adam, died in infancy. The remaining sons were John (1648), Jacob (1662), Thomas (1664), and Peter. Though he ignored the descendants of John's daughters (married Tabor, Reed, Swift, and Soule), the compiler did carry through with descendants on the distaff side in later generations. He also supplied brief genealogies for descendants of Francis COOKE (two generations, one page), Samuel ALLEN of Braintree (four generations, two pages), and Eleazer HUTICHINSON (six generations, eleven pages). Other prominent family names include: BABBITT, BONNEY, BOSWORTH, CATE, CUSHMAN, DREW, EATON, HALL, JOHNSON, LEONARD, LYON, PACKARD, PRATT, ROOT, RUGGLES, STURTEVANT, THOMAS, TITCOMB, WASHBURN, WATERMAN, AND WOOD. For all the names in this genealogy, see the Name List.
