Gregory Stone Genealogy: Ancestry and Descendants of Dea. Gregory Stone of Cambridge, Mass., 1320-1917, by J. Gardner Bartlett (Boston, 1918). 8vo., 905 + ix pages, including index (98 pages) and sixteen images (some interleaved). Digital Edition on CD-ROM © August 2000
This massive volume, sponsored by the Stone Family Association and compiled by a professional genealogist, opens with a forty-page account of Gregory's ancestors in Great Bromley, England, beginning with Walter Atte Stone, who was born probably about 1285. It continues with Gregory's descendants through the thirteenth generation, the last "event" recorded being in 1917. Deacon Gregory Stone, the youngest of David Stone's eleven children, was baptized in Great Bromley on 19 April 1592. In 1617, he married Margaret Garrard in Nayland, and in 1627, Mrs. Lydia (---) Cooper. By his first wife, Gregory had four children; by his second, three. He emigrated to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1635, with his wife Lydia, his six surviving children, and two step-children (John and Lydia Cooper).
Other than the usual (Smith, Jones, Brown, Johnson, etc.), allied families that figure significantly in the Gregory Stone Genealogy include: ADAMS, ALLEN, BARRETT, BELLOWS, BENT, BLAKE, BROOKS, CAMPBELL, CLAP, CLARK, COOK, CUTLER, DAVENPORT, DAVIS, EATON, ESTABROOK, FAIRBANKS, FISHER, FISKE, FOSTER, FROST, GATES, GODDARD, GRAVES, HALL, HARRINGTON, HASTINGS, HAVEN, HEMENWAY, HILL, HOWE, HUBBARD, HUNT, KNOWLTON, LINCOLN, MASON, MAYNARD, MERRIAM, MILLER, MOORE, MORSE, NOYES, PARKER, PERRY, PHILLIPS, PIERCE, PRATT, READ, RICE, RICHARDS, RICHARDSON, ROBINSON, RUSSELL, SCOTT, SIMONDS, TAYLOR, THOMPSON, TRUMBULL, WALKER, WARD, WARREN, WELLINGTON, WHEELER, WHITNEY, WILLARD, WOOD, and WRIGHT. The Stones of Surry, Revised Edition, by Charles H. Stone (Charlotte, N.C., 1955). 8vo., 499 pages, with 41 images (three from the first edition) and two charts (six additional images). Digital Edition on CD-ROM © December 1998
This genealogy is about the families (ancestors and descendants) of two brothers, John and William Stone, who settled in Surry County, North Carolina, about 1780. The first half of the volume contains information concerning the ancestry of the two brothers (said to have been descendants of Governor William Stone of Maryland), the circumstances of their relocation from Virginia to North Carolina, assorted life histories; and copies of notes and correspondence assembled by the author during his research. The second half of the volume focuses on the descendants of William's brother, John, and more particularly on John's son, Enoch.
Significant collateral families include CHRISTENSEN, CLOWARD, DAVIS, DENNY, DODSON, FULK, GARDNER, GORDON, HANKS, HILL, JOHNSON, KING, LARSON, NIELSON, PATTERSON, PRATT, RYTTING, SABIN, TAYLOR, TUCKER, and VENABLE.
The Digital Edition: Complete with one text file (1.8 Mb) and forty-seven images files (3.0 Mb).
Enhancements: There are intergenerational hyperlinks and hyperlinks from the text file to the image files. The absence of an index in the original volume (what the compiler calls an "index" is at best a glorified table of contents) makes the search capabilities of the Digital Edition especially valuable. This Digital Edition includes images from the first printed edition, not found in the second.
