This
history of the Spofford family opens with the statement: “Few families
can trace a more authentic record of their European ancestry than can the
Spoffords.” The next thirty-seven pages recount what is known
(or believed) about the English (Anglo-Saxon) ancestry of the immigrant
ancestor, John Spofford. The remainder of the volume is devoted to John’s
Ancestors, through ten generations, with additional notes on the pedigree
of English Spoffords (seven pages), Reginald Spofford, the musician (three
pages), personal recollections of Jeremiah Spofford (from the 1869 edition,
six pages), and the Spofford Family Association (eight pages).
Descendants of the family include the Governor of Idaho, Edward A. Stevenson,
and the Governor of Nevada, Charles C. Stevenson. Henry M. Spofford
was elected in Louisiana to the U. S. Senate, but was not seated. Ainsworth
R. Spofford had a distinguished career as Librarian of Congress.
