Genealogical History of the Rice Family: Descendants of Deacon Edmund Rice, by Andrew Henshaw Ward (Boston, 1858).  8vo, viii + 379 pages of text. Digital Edition on CD-ROM © July 2003.

Edmund Rice, of Berkhamstead, England, came to New England in 1638 or 1639 and settled in Sudbury, Massachusetts.  He had twelve children (nine sons and three daughters) -- eleven of whom lived to have progeny of their own, through six additional generations (more than 6,000 descendants, in all, as of 1858).

"Professional" genealogists claim (rightfully, we presume) that you can't rely upon information that you don't find in original sources (birth records, marriage records, death certicates, property records, wills, etc.).  On the other hand, many of the "original sources" that one might expect to find in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were never created.  As a result, the "anecdotal" information garnered by compilers of genealogies from living members of the family, though "hearsay," legally speaking, is often the most reliable information available.  Mr. Ward used this "hearsay" information most judicially.

The index of this volume is especially helpful in showing the names of the spouses, together with with Rice descendants.  Related families of prominence include BRIGHAM, CHILDS, DRURY, HOWE, MAYNARD, MOORE, NEWTON, and WARNER.  To view the whole index, please download the name list.

Edmund Rice and His Family, by Elsie Hawes Smith (Boston, 1938). 8vo, 100 pages.  Digital Edition on CD-ROM © May 2005.

The life stories of Edmund Rice (the immigrant), his children, and grandchildren in historical context.  Compiled by Elsie Smith for the Edmund Rice Association, this eloquent volume recounts the triumps, trials, and tribulations of the family in colonial New England.  Says the author:  "This book is not a genealogy.  I have endeavored only to tell a story informative and interesting, and by sketching something of the history and customs of the day, to bring to life again some of those early ancestors of ours whose achievements were outstanding and colorful."

The Digital Edition:  Complete with one text files (340 Kb).

Enhancements: Because this volume has no index, readers will appreciate the search capabilities of their word processing software.
