The first sixty pages of this volume contain notes on the origins of the Lee name and family, the Lees of Great Britain, the Lees of America, Thomas Leigh of Ipswich (1642-1661), Henry Lee of Manchester (1650-1675), Thomas Lee of Boston (1707-1766), and Thomas Lee of Boston and Cambridge (1765-1779). The remainder of the volume covers the history of John Leigh and his Lee descendants through about 1888 (nine generations). There are three appendices -- the first, a recapitulation of "matters regarding John Leigh and his Descendants"; the second, a history of Woodis (Woodhouse) family (about seventeen pages); the third, a copy of a letter from J. Henry Lea on Lee reseach in England. The family resided in Massachusetts, primarily in Ipswich, Concord, Shrewsbury, and Barre. Some branches removed, mostly in the nineteenth century, to other locations, including Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Utah, and Vermont.
There are two indexes: and index of names (which is extraordinarily useful in specifying (so far as is known) the birth and death dates of the individuals indexed), and an index of localities. For the convenience of Lee researchers, these indexes are on line.
Most families have several closely related "collateral" lines that can be easily identified through perusal of the index. However, by perusal of the index in this compilation, the Lee family of Ipswich seems to have had significant marital ties only with the BROWN, HANCOCK, PATRICK, PLUMMER, SMITH, TREMAIN, WELD, and WOODHOUSE families.
