History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family, and Particularly of the Descendants of George and Michael Harlan, Who Settled in Chester County, Pa., 1687, by Alpheus H. Harlan (ca. 1916). 4to, vii + 1,065 pages of text, including eighty-five pages of index, plus forty-eight interleaved images. Digital Edition on CD-ROM © June 2003.
This very large genealogy, the product of about thirty years' research, recounts the history of George and Michael Harlan (Quakers), and their descendants, in both male and female lines, through the tenth, and sometimes the eleventh generation. Significant numbers of the family migrated south, primarily to North Carolina; others relocated to the Middle West (Indian, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, etc.). There were Harlan descendants in both the Union and Confederate Armies. Harlans were also well represented in California, to which George Harlan (b. 1802) emigrated in 1846. He and his party built the road from Fort Bridger to Salt Lake -- "They filled in the rocks at the head of Weber Canon, and let down their wagons after taking them apart, thus making a road for the Donnor party the next winter."
Harlan descendants had their share of public servants. We are particularly impressed, however, with the marriages on the distaff side: one Harlan daughter married the son of Abraham Lincoln. Another married William McKinley, of whom the compiler says only that he died in Buffalo, New York, 1901, from gunshot wounds.
