Danvers, Massachusetts

History of the Town of Danvers, from its Earliest Settlement to the Year 1848, by  J. W. Hanson (Danvers, Massachusetts, 1848), 8vo, 304 pages (including a six-page index).  The Digital Edition is published on CD-ROM, March 2010

A well-informed account of the Danvers’settlement and development from about 1625 to 1848, with exceptionally good coverage of its responses to the War of the Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and other issues of national importance (e.g., temperance and slavery); ecclesiastical matters, commercial enterprises (ultimately leading to the pre-eminence of the leather industry), and the daily lives and concerns of its residents. Naturally, it includes a judicious, reasoned treatment of the witchcraft hysteria, with follow-up of actions after the event.

The volume offers no formal "genealogy" per se, but does provide us with brief biographies of prominent citizens (e.g., Endecott, Eppes, Burroughs, Parris, Nelson, Green, Prescott, Clarke, Putnam, Prince, Page, Hutchinson, Flint, Holten, [Sarah] Gloyd, Foster, Wadsworth, [Eliza] Wharton (Whitman), Wallis, Porter, Osborn,  Pope, Bowditch, and Read). And, like other town histories, it is full of useful tidbits about its residents, past and present.

There is an index, but it is of limited use to genealogists: except for the list of "biographies," it references only things and events, not people.  Genealogists will, therefore, appreciate the search capabilities afforded by their word processing software.
