The Cooley Genealogy: Descendants of Ensign Benjamin Cooley, an Early Settler of Springfield and Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and other Members of the Family in America, by Mortimer Elwyn Cooley in collaboration with Lyman Edgar Cooley and Ernest Lynwood Cooley; compiled Vivian Bulloch Keatley (Rutland, VT., 1941), 8vo, xxvi + 1199 pages with 190 pages of index and nine images. The Cooley Genealogy is the result of an exhaustive study, which engaged the principal author, Mortimer Cooley, in nearly sixty years of research in primary and secondary sources, including "a large number of old family letters, and family records faded and dog-eared, venerable with age, many of them found in my grandfather's old hand-made deerskin roll, now in my possession and known as the 'Lyman Cooley Deerskin Roll.'"
The "History" portion of this publication (195 pages) includes a chapter on early references to the Cooley name in England, France, and Ireland; an account of the Cooley Coat of Arms and the lineage of the Duke of Wellington; a lengthy and learned history of Springfield and Longmeadow, Massachusetts, by Henry Andrew Wright, with "special reference to Benjamin Cooley"; a chapter on early Cooley houses in America; and a chapter on Cooley records in the Revolutionary War.
The "Genealogy" portion contains an account of Benjamin Cooley (five pages) and records of his four sons and their descendants: Obadiah (186 pages), Eliakim (59 pages), Daniel (366 pages) and Joseph (28 pages). An appendix (122 pages) contains notes on Cooley families and individuals "not known to be descendants of Benjamin Cooley." This is followed by "acknowledgements" (six pages) and a bibliography (42 pages). There are four indexes (110 pages): a Cooley index, a Surname index (persons who have surnames other than Cooley), a subject index, and a geographical index
