Carpenter
History and Genealogy of the Carpenter Family in America from the Settlement at Providence, R. I., 1637 to 1901, by Daniel Hoogland Carpenter (New Jersey, 1901). 8vo, 365 pages of text, plus sixteen interleaved images. Digital Edition on CD-ROM © June 2005.
The immigrant progenitor of this Carpenter family was William, son and heir of Richard Carpenter of Amesbury, Wiltshire, England. William settled in Providence, Rhode Island, as early as 1637, together with his wife, Elizabeth Arnold, and their first child, Joseph, who was born in England about 1635. The second child, Lydia, was born in Providence about 1638; their remaining six children were all born in Pawtuxet.
An introductory chapter (about thirty pages) discusses the William's English origins, his possible relationship to other Carpenter immigrants, and his settlement in Providence. It includes transcriptions of his will and related probate records, including an inventory of this estate. Of the remainder of the volume, approximately 280 pages cover the descendants of Joseph, who removed from Rhode Island to Hempstead (Mosquito Cove), Long Island, about 1677. By the end of the Nineteenth Century, we find Joseph's descendants mostly in New York and New Jersey. There are thirty additional pages devoted to William's other seven children and their descendants. The volume closes with an addendum, containing information on lines of uncertain origin, and a further note on the family's English pedigree.
Among surnames that occur most frequently in this Carpenter genealogy we find ALBERTSON, ARNOLD, BIRDSALL, COCKS, COLES, CORNELL, FIELD, FOWLER, FROST, GOULDING (GOLDING), GRIFFEN, HAIGHT, HAVILAND, HAWKS (HAWKSHURST), HOPKINS, HORTON, KIPP, LAWRENCE, LYON, MERRITT, MILLER, MOTT, PEARSALL, POWELL, PURDY, SEAMAN, SMITH, SUTTON, THORNE, TOWNSEND, UNDERHILL, WEEKS, WHITE, WILLETTS, WILLIAMS, and WRIGHT.
