Bigelow

Genealogy of the Bigelow Family of America from the Marriage in 1642 of John Biglo and Mary Warren to the Year 1890, by Gilman Bigelow Howe, Worcester, Massachusetts, 1890.  517 numbered pages and sixteen interleaved engravings.  The Digital Edition on CD-ROM © March 2004.

This genealogical history of the Bigelow family in America begins in Watertown, Massachusetts, with the marriage, on 30 August 1642, of "John Bigulah" and "Mary Warin."  It then traces the offspring of this union, mostly in the male (Bigelow) line, through nine additional generations.   Progeny of the fourth generation (born mostly in the first half of the 18th century) lived mostly in Massachusetts and Connecticut, but some of them had already migrated to New Jersey, New York, and New Hampshire.  One hundred years later, in the eighth generation (born mostly in the middle of the nineteenth century) we find them as far afield as California, Florida, Texas, North Dakota, Nova Scotia, and Ontario.  One branch of the family midgrated to Australia, but returned after several year to settle in Maine.  One of the Bigelow descendants, Naham, embraced Mormonism and transported his family, in 1850, to Utah.  His daughters, Mary Jane and Lucy, married Brigham Young in March 1847.  Another Bigelow, Hobart, was governor of Connecticut.  Several were prominent industrialists, including the founder of the Bigelow Carpet factory.

Among collateral families the following appear most frequently in the index:  ADAMS, BAKER, BRIGHAM, BROOKS, BROWN, CLARK, DAVIS, HALL, HARRINGTON, HOWE, JOHNSON, JONES, MILLER, MOORE, MORSE, NEWTON, NICHOLS, PARKER, PIERCE, PRATT, RICE, RICHARDSON, ROBINSON, SAWYER, SMITH, TAYLOR, THOMPSON, WALKER, WARREN, WHEELER, WHITE, WHITNEY, WILLIAMS, and WOOD.  The entire index of the volume is on-line, but should be used with caution:  it lists only the head of families of the Bigelow surname, and only the surnames of collateral families.   Readers of the Digital Edition will appreciate the search capabilities of their word processing programs.
