Adams

A Genealogical History of Robert Adams of Newbury, Mass., and His Descendants, 1635-1900, by Andrew M. Adams (Rutland, VT., 1900).  8vo, vi + 564 pages (including 46 pages in three indexes), with 30 interleaved images. Digital Edition on CD-ROM © April 2002.

Robert Adams, a tailor, came to America with his wife, Eleanor, and two children in 1635.  He settled first in Ipswich, then in Salem, and finally (1640) removed to Newbury, where he acquired a large farm, and valuable property.  He had nine children, six of whom survived to adulthood and had children of their own.  This genealogy charts the descendants of these six children in the male and female lines (but principally in the male lines) through ten additional generations.

Prominent collateral families include:  ALLEN, ANDREWS, BARTLETT, BROWN, CHASE, COOK, DAVIS, FOWLER, GOODWIN, HALE, HALL, HILL, JOHNSON, JONES, KENT, KNIGHT, KIMBALL, KING, LANE, LITTLE, MATHER, McKELVEY (of whom there are six images), MERRILL, MILLER, MORSE, NOYES, OSGOOD, PARKER, PERKINS, PETTENGILL, PHILLIPS, PLUMER, ROBINSON, ROGERS, RUSSELL, SARGENT, SIKES, SMITH, SPOFFORD, STEVENS, TAYLOR, THURLOW, WALKER, WHITE, WHITNEY, WILLIAMS, WILSON, WINCHESTER, WRIGHT, and YOUNG.  To view the entire index (in RTF), click here: Name List.

There are three indexes.  Though readers of the Digital Edition find indexes largely irrelevant, the first two of the three are particularly interesting in that (1) they separate male from female prodigy, (2) each listed name is associated with his or her father, and (3) each name is identified further by date of birth.  The third index (persons of surnames other than Adams) is rather disappointing, in that it indexes only the surnames (not the given names) of Robert's descendants.  This makes the "search capabilities" of the Digital Edition all the more valuable.

The Digital Edition:  Three text (2.6 Mb) and thirty high-resolution images in JPEG format (1.3 Mb).

Enhancements include: Navigation aids, including intergenerational (lineage-tracking) hyperlinks and hyperlinks in the text to corresponding image files.  There is also a Table of Contents (not in the original), courtesy of Digital Editions.
